A week of meals for a kid who only eats plain pasta

Here's a sample week for a child whose main safe food is plain pasta. Every day has something familiar on the plate, and a few meals follow the plain pasta food chain (same crunch, same shape, same dip, one small change at a time) so a new food never feels like a big leap.

How to use this week

  • Keep a safe food on the plate at every meal, so there's always something they'll eat.
  • Serve new foods next to familiar ones, never instead of them. A single bite-sized piece is plenty.
  • Swap meals around freely. Repeating a meal that worked is a win, not a failure.
  • For kids under 4, cut food into small, soft pieces and halve round foods like blueberries.
Monday
Breakfast · Buttered Toast Fingers

Whole-wheat toast with butter, cut into strips, with banana slices.

🥬 Stealth: Use a bread with a soft crust so it's as gentle as pasta.
🍽️ Plating: Serve the banana on its own little plate.
💬 Soft, plain and familiar.
Lunch · Buttered Pasta Bowl

Their usual buttered pasta with a few cheese cubes on the side.

🥬 Stealth: Cook the pasta in low-sodium broth for extra flavor without changing the look.
🍽️ Plating: Keep the cheese in a separate cup.
💬 Exactly the safe food, with a small side to look at.
Dinner · Bowtie Pasta Night

Buttered bowtie pasta with soft steamed carrots cut into thin half-moons.

🥬 Stealth: Steam the carrots until fork-tender so they're as soft as the pasta.
🍽️ Plating: Put three carrot pieces at the edge of the plate. That's enough.
💬 Same taste, a new pasta shape (step 1 of the chain).
Tuesday
Breakfast · Oatmeal with Butter

Plain oats cooked soft with a little butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

🥬 Stealth: Cook the oats in milk for extra protein.
🍽️ Plating: Serve warm, not hot, in their favorite bowl.
💬 Smooth and mild, like pasta in the morning.
Lunch · Pasta Shells and Peas Plate

Small shells with butter, and a few peas in a separate cup.

🥬 Stealth: Use frozen peas thawed in warm water so they stay sweet and soft.
🍽️ Plating: Peas stay in their own cup. No mixing unless they choose.
💬 Peas are about the size of the shells.
Dinner · Chicken and Buttered Noodles

Egg noodles with butter and small strips of plain baked chicken.

🥬 Stealth: Stir a spoonful of grated zucchini into the butter. It melts into the noodles.
🍽️ Plating: Keep the chicken next to the noodles, not on top.
💬 Egg noodles are soft and familiar.
Wednesday
Breakfast · Mini Pancakes

Small plain pancakes with a little butter.

🥬 Stealth: Mix a spoonful of mashed banana into the batter.
🍽️ Plating: Stack three for a 'pancake tower'.
💬 Soft, warm and predictable.
Lunch · Parmesan Pasta

Buttered pasta with a light sprinkle of grated parmesan.

🥬 Stealth: Parmesan adds flavor in a tiny amount, so a pinch is plenty.
🍽️ Plating: Let them sprinkle the cheese themselves.
💬 One new flavor on top of the safe food (step 2).
Dinner · Mini Meatballs and Spaghetti

Plain spaghetti with three small, soft meatballs on the side.

🥬 Stealth: Grate onion and carrot very finely into the meatball mix.
🍽️ Plating: Cut the meatballs in half for little ones.
💬 The spaghetti they know, with a new protein beside it.
Thursday
Breakfast · Yogurt and Soft Pear

Plain or vanilla yogurt with thin slices of ripe pear.

🥬 Stealth: Choose whole-milk yogurt for staying power.
🍽️ Plating: Fan the pear slices in a circle.
💬 Cool and smooth.
Lunch · Pasta Salad Cups

Cold buttered rotini with a few cucumber half-moons on the side.

🥬 Stealth: A drizzle of olive oil keeps the pasta from sticking.
🍽️ Plating: Serve in a muffin tin with one section per food.
💬 The same pasta, served cool for a change.
Dinner · Pasta with Sauce on the Side

Their usual pasta with a small cup of mild tomato sauce for dipping.

🥬 Stealth: Blend a little roasted red pepper into the sauce.
🍽️ Plating: Sauce goes in a cup, never poured over.
💬 They decide if the pasta goes for a swim (step 3).
Friday
Breakfast · Scrambled Eggs and Toast

Soft scrambled eggs with buttered toast strips.

🥬 Stealth: Whisk a splash of milk into the eggs.
🍽️ Plating: Toast 'soldiers' for dipping.
💬 Mild and soft.
Lunch · Orzo with Butter

Tiny rice-shaped pasta with butter and parmesan.

🥬 Stealth: Stir in a spoonful of very finely chopped spinach.
🍽️ Plating: Serve with a spoon, not a fork.
💬 A new pasta shape with the same taste.
Dinner · Homemade Pizza Pasta Bake

Penne baked with a little mozzarella on top, sauce on the side.

🥬 Stealth: Add a spoonful of cottage cheese under the mozzarella.
🍽️ Plating: Scoop a portion with lots of golden top.
💬 Melty cheese makes pasta feel like a treat.
Saturday
Breakfast · French Toast Sticks

Bread dipped in egg, cooked and cut into strips.

🥬 Stealth: Use whole-grain bread.
🍽️ Plating: Serve with a small cup of syrup or yogurt for dipping.
💬 Finger food that's fun to dip.
Lunch · Pasta and Cheese Picnic

Buttered pasta, cheese cubes and thin apple slices.

🥬 Stealth: Leave the apple peel on, sliced thin.
🍽️ Plating: Lay it out like a picnic on a tea towel.
💬 All familiar foods in a fun setting.
Dinner · Pasta with Peas Mixed In

Buttered shells with a small handful of soft peas stirred through.

🥬 Stealth: Add a little butter to the peas so they taste like the pasta.
🍽️ Plating: Start with just a few peas mixed in.
💬 The last step of the chain: a vegetable inside the safe food (step 4).
Sunday
Breakfast · Waffles and Berries

Plain waffles with sliced strawberries on the side.

🥬 Stealth: Use a whole-grain waffle mix.
🍽️ Plating: Berries in a separate cup.
💬 Crispy outside, soft inside.
Lunch · Mac and Cheese

Simple stovetop mac and cheese.

🥬 Stealth: Stir in a spoonful of butternut squash puree. It matches the color.
🍽️ Plating: Serve a small portion with seconds available.
💬 Pasta in its cheesiest form.
Dinner · Chicken Noodle Soup

Mild broth with egg noodles and small pieces of chicken.

🥬 Stealth: Simmer finely diced carrot and celery in the broth, then remove them if needed.
🍽️ Plating: Let it cool to warm before serving.
💬 Noodles they love, in a cozy new setting.
